6 More Days...
Yeah. 6 more days until my Maryland trip. I'm going to attend a class being taught by Charles Carroll of LearnAsp.com . I'm really excited because I will get to meet the many programming nerds that I've met via IM and other means. Maryland here I come.

I was kind of surprised to see this post. I know Charles is a pretty controversial figure, and most people either love him or hate him. He no doubt accomplished a lot during the origination and advent of ASP.NET but I haven't seen much of value contributed by him in years, particularly with respect to ASP.NET 2.0. If you don't mind me asking, how did you go about chosing to be trained by him? Did you know him from somewhere, do you happen to know people trained by him, have you seen his work elsewhere, all of the above? I ask mainly because about three years ago I had considered attending one of his training classes, however after reading all the material on his site, with the fueds with everyone to MS to the people in the MVP program, I had to seriously rethink that. After time, the more things I saw him post, the more feuds I saw him have with people, the more incidents of disturbed rants, the more I realized he's someone I should probably avoid. He may be a great trainer and/or know ASP.NET 2.0 really well. You can necessarily assume that he's incompetent just b/c he has a bunch of insane sounding rants on his site or has started fights with so many people in the community. Over time, after reading more than a few of his rants, he scares me personally, but I still do wonder if his technical skills are there, after all he did gain some fame albeit short lived. If you would, please post about your epxerience from a technical point of view afterward b/c I'd be really interested in hearing about what his training is like from someone who's been experienced with him recently.

Cheers,

John

I met Charles by visiting his website and saw his IM contact info and added him to my buddy list. From there on out, he has not only become one of my true friends (a title I don't give out very easily), but also my mentor. If it wasn't for him, there is no doubt in my mind that I wouldn't be where I am today. Even though this is my first time attending his class, his ongoing teachings in the virtual like classroom that is e-mail, IM, and online groups has been excellent.

As for the "feuds" you mention: It's very easily to judge, but unless you know what has or has not happened first hand, then what is presented on the Internet or any other source can make for an unfair judgment. Charles does not scare me and I've come to know him rather well. He is a very kind and caring person. And as such, I can't understand where all the controversy cames from.

I can understand where the controversy has come from, but it's still a shame that people who don't even know the guy are taking the time to badmouth him on a consistent basis.  Don't let them form your opinions for you.
